5 Tips for Saving Your Back While Packing

November 1, 2021

Many people hope to save money on their moves by handling packing themselves, but lifting and carrying heavy boxes and items can put a lot of strain on your back. These are five tips to avoid back injuries while packing.

1. Watch Your Lifting Form

Lifting heavier items correctly is an important way to avoid straining or injuring your back. Keep your back straight and bend your knees rather than your back when picking something up. When moving, turn your feet and don't twist your body.

2. Take Your Time

Rushing through packing can lead to uncomfortable lifting movements or trying to move things that are too heavy. Plan ahead so you have plenty of time to pack thoughtfully and at a comfortable pace. Start early so you can take breaks and spread your packing work out over multiple sessions.

3. Use a Dolly

Moving dollies, which are available in either two or four-wheeled versions, allow you to avoid carrying heavy boxes and furniture items. Carrying heavy and bulky items in and out of the house requires holding them for a longer period of time, which puts extra strain on your back.

4. Minimize Bending Over

Each time you bend down while packing, you put more strain on your back, so avoid doing it more than you have to. Set boxes on a counter or other elevated surface so you can pack them while standing upright. Stack boxes on top of each other so you don't need to bend to pick up each one.

5. Hire a Professional Mover

The best way to avoid straining your back is to skip packing entirely by hiring a professional moving company to handle your packing and moving for you. Letting a professional take care of your move allows you to avoid both stress and the risk of hurting your back.
