Budgeting the Cost of Your Move

April 25, 2022

Are you getting ready to move? One of the first things you'll want to do is decide on a budget for your move. After all, your belongings won't pack and move themselves! Will you need packing supplies, help with the packing, temporary storage, or help loading & unloading? Maybe you're looking for full-service movers to make the process as easy as possible. Your moving budget will depend on how little or how much help you'll need.

Packing Materials and Packers

Wrapping paper, boxes of all sizes, tape, shrink wrap... Packing a house full of goods is a big job and the proper materials are required to do that job right. Skimp on the packing materials and you may be shocked at the damage that can occur while just moving across town!

For the best outcome:

  • Hire professional packers. This is often worthwhile, especially if you have many fragile or valuable items to pack. Choose the number of packers you'll need and pay for them by the hour (with a three-hour minimum).
  • Presort your household goods. You can save money by presorting into two categories — things like clothes, linens, and books you can pack yourself and delicate items you'd rather have the professionals pack.

Climate-Controlled Storage

If there's going to be a delay getting into your new home, you may need to put your household goods into storage temporarily. Climate-controlled storage is especially important for items that are sensitive to changes in temperature or humidity like:

  • Antiques
  • Woof Furniture
  • Musical Instruments
  • Art Supplies
  • Family Heirlooms

Choose a storage unit that's prorated after the first month or that offers discounts to help you save money.

Professional Movers

Will you need help loading and unloading your rented moving truck? You can hire professional movers to handle all of that heavy lifting for you. The hourly rate is based on the number of movers needed and whether you're moving on a weekday or a Saturday.

Save time (and money!) by decluttering beforehand. The less extraneous stuff you're moving, the faster the move will go and the more money you'll save! Follow the experts' cost-saving moving tips to save even more money.
