Moving Mom to a Senior Living Facility

June 22, 2021

Moving your mom into an assisted living facility is often stressful and difficult. Here are some tips to help make the move a bit easier on you both.

Don't Forget the Comforts of Home

A move to a senior living facility generally means some serious downsizing. While larger pieces of furniture may not fit, it's important to take meaningful items. Taking some familiar contents from her old home with her to the new place will help ease the transition to senior living. Here are some suggestions:

  • Framed photographs of family and friends
  • Photo albums
  • Favorite pieces of art
  • Throw pillows
  • Her familiar bedside table
  • A comforting blanket and pillows
  • Favorite books
  • Her favorite coffee mug and/or teacup and saucer

Take Your Time Sorting

Parting with belongings is always stressful — especially when it's something your mom has had for decades. Spend time with your mom reminiscing about her treasures as you decide together where each piece will go.

Start with the least used areas of her home first. Parting with things that have been tucked away in the attic, basement, or spare room will be easier than items she sees or uses every day.

As you're sorting, put together a bag or box of essentials to hand carry on the day of the move. These should include:

  • All medications
  • Basic toiletries
  • Important papers
  • Drinks and snacks
  • Anything else that will comfort and calm her on the stressful big day

Find New Homes for Mom's Treasures

Your mom will have treasures that she simply won't want to part with. If possible, help her find a place for them in her new home. If her treasured antiques are simply too large to fit, encourage her to pass them on to a family member or friend who will treasure them as much as she does.
